Play In Pitch
LLC
Hello, my name is Mr. Patrick.
I have been a music educator since 1991 specializing in private music lessons
for students of stringed instruments. I teach over 50 students at my private
studio in the lakes region of New Hampshire and at a private school in the small
town of Sanborton New Hampshire. I also conduct adult ensemble groups, from jazz
to string ensembles and folk/blues groups.
As teachers of stringed
instruments (violin, viola, and cello), my fellow teachers and I would have many
conversations about how to get our students to play in tune, to play on pitch.
For fretted
instruments, like the guitar or mandolin, getting our students to play in pitch
is easier. As long as the instrument is of decent construction and the strings
are tuned correctly, the finger just needs to be placed behind the appropriate
fret. For fretless instruments like the violin, viola, cello, etc. the learning
curve for our students is now two fold. Not only do we need to teach our
students how to play the instrument, we must also find a way to teach them to
play in pitch.
So how does one go
about training the ear for true pitch on a fretless instrument? The answer is on
one hand simple, Practice, and on the other hand complex,
"How do I practice to play in true pitch?" Thus was born
"Play in Pitch"
I started developing the
Play in Pitch program several years back. I used it exclusively
with just my own string students. As the program matured I started to see a huge
difference in the progress of my students. The ability of my students to play
more accurately in pitch improved greatly. The time had come to share this
simple yet effective method of teaching and learning to Play in
Pitch.
